Everyone wants a fast computer, but over time any computer will decrease in overall speed.
Simply buying a faster computer can solve speed problems, however in many cases the old computer can have its speed increased with a few troubleshooting actions. Fast computers are fast because their hardware and software are kept clean and organized.
Want a fast computer? Use Disk Defrag and Disk Cleanup to their full potential and enjoy the benefits of a fast computer. Ensure that you backup all sensitive documents and data before attempting to get a faster computer.
Once a hard drive becomes relatively full it will store files in any location available that it can find. The methods in which the files are stored are not the most efficient and can lead to slower loading times. To address this problem Microsoft provides a free utility called Disk Defragmenter, which comes with every Windows operating system. Disk Defragmenter organizes data files on the hard drive to be right next to each other based on their respective programs. A fast computer will become much slower if a disk defragmentation is not performed as it becomes necessary.
Get a faster computer with Disk Defrag:
- Click Start
- Select All Programs
- Select Accessories
- Select System Tools
- Click Disk Defragmenter in the menu.
This will open the Disk Defragmenter program, which provides you with various options to customize your defragmentation process. For each hard drive you wish to defragment make sure to have Disk Defragmenter analyze each one. If Disk Defragmenter provides results that suggest a defragmentation would not be beneficial then do not perform a defragmentation. However, if Disk Defragmenter suggests you defragment a drive then proceed. Click “Defragment Disk” and the defragmenting process will begin.
Another great method to get a faster computer is to use the Disk Cleanup utility. The Disk Cleanup utility can free up much needed disk space on the hard drive. Get a faster computer by deleting unnecessary files and programs. Disk Cleanup is a free utility provided by Microsoft on the Windows operating system. Areas such as the recycle bin, downloads folder, temporary Internet files, and unused programs are just a few of the many places that Disk Cleanup will work on.
Get a faster computer with Disk Cleanup:
- Click Start
- Select All Programs
- Select Accessories
- Select System Tools
- Click Disk Cleanup in the menu.
Once Disk Cleanup is open it will provide a calculation as to how much disk space will become free if a cleanup is performed. There will also be areas of your computer you can choose to have Disk Cleanup work on. After making the necessary selections click “Ok” and Disk Cleanup will ask you if you wish to delete the selected files. Select “Yes” and Disk Cleanup will perform a cleanup on the selected areas of your computer.
